For any footballer that's recently been contacted by an agent or parent searching for the right person to represent your son or daughter, we've decided to detail our 8 things you should at least factor in your decision-making when choosing an agent to represent you.
No.1: Do you like them?.. It may sound silly but Harvard research suggests likeability is the most important factor for any of today's leaders.
No.2: Honesty. Have they always kept to their word and told you answers without reluctance? Or do they operate in a secretive manner?
No.3: Do they make uncertain promises? Be careful of any agent making promises that are clearly out of their control.
No.4: Trust. How do you know whether you can put your trust in an agent if you don't know much about them? You need to have faith that this person will work as hard as possible for you when you need.
No.5: A UK representation contract is 2 years! Be immediately wary if someone tells you otherwise.
No.6: Do you matter? There are many big agencies that will sign as many players as possible, just because. It might suit some individuals needs to be represented by a big name but not all. Ensure the agent can offer you the time you deserve and that you come first.
No.7: Background. Do they have the right background to even operate in the football industry? With the change in laws for intermediaries, it now means you may come across individuals that are trying to make a quick buck without knowing what they are doing.
No.8: Beware of deals being made before you are signed. You are not a commodity. Stay clear of any individual that is prepared to buy your signature or that discusses deals without your consent or signature. No relationship should be based on that precedent.
Remember, you will be entering into a long term relationship with this person. It's important all of the above are considered before making a decision. It should not always be the first person you meet, or your friend's agent. We are all different and need different things.
